Boat builder Amol Mondal uses a split bamboo strip to compare the relative length of the port and starboard buttock curves at a datum on the keel that was marked at the time of the keel-and-post balancing process. Having just measured the distance from that datum along the port buttock to the current sheer, he preserves that distance with his pinched thumb and finger and transfers the bamboo strip to the starboard side, where the buttock proves to be shorter.
