Different uses of the "cái khót" (bamboo slice) : Preforming and surface treatment of cooking pots in Quế An village

Giang Ngọc Xanh, the potter’s husband uses a thin slice of bamboo with sharp edges, the ends of which are tied together with plastic string (cái khót) to scrape the outside of the pot and form the round bottom. The potter,Võ Thị Sương, uses the same tool but with blunt edges. She rubs it against the walls of the cooking pot with water to smooth the surface. The same tool with sharp edges is used to scrape the inside of the pot both during the preforming on wet clay and preforming on leather-hard clay.
