A narrow raffia mat made by Nafana mat weaver (deŋglɛ tinfun) Alexander Owusu for demonstration purposes, pictured with a scale in centimetres. The diagonal orientation of the weave is accentuated by darker strands that were less thoroughly dried before weaving than the light ones. A portion of the finished mat remains wrapped on a raffia palm petiole stick (gbandaa kaan, left). To the right, unwoven raffia strands (pinde) extend diagonally from the mat's horizontal selvage. To the left of the scale, short ends of strands extend out from the mat, marking the weaving pass where new strands were added. These and the unwoven ends of strands will be trimmed away to finish the mat. Sabiye, Banda District, Ghana.
