A narrow demonstration raffia mat (dɛŋglɛ) woven by Nafana mat weaver (deŋglɛ tinfun) Alexander Owusu, pictured with a scale in centimetres. A portion of the finished mat remains wrapped on a raffia palm petiole stick (gbandaa kaan, left). To the right, unwoven raffia strands (pinde) extend diagonally from the mat's horizontal selvage and from a row several centimetres away from the selvage. These are weft strands retired while weaving the finishing pass at the selvage edge and inward side respectively. To the left of the scale, short strand ends extend out from the mat, marking the weaving pass where new strands were added. These and the unwoven ends of strands will be trimmed away to finish the mat. Sabiye, Banda District, Ghana.
