Sitting in the stern on an already fitted through beam, boat builders Manimohan (L) and Amol (R) Mondal each use a hammer and chisel to prepare a through beam for installation; the former fairs what is a relatively poor timber, while the latter cuts a slot on the underside of the through beam. The slots will fit over the sub-sheer strakes (naba dali) and prevent lateral movement.
