Flattened paper kimono ready for ironing. This unused paper kamiko kimono for folding for storage. This was made for monks at Tōdaiji by students from Ōhara Wafuku Senmon Gakuen. This kimono is made from handmade washi paper made by artisans from various locations in Japan. The paper is wrinkled and treated with agar agar by the monks at Tōdaiji, then attached together on a roll. Each monk prepares the paper for their own kimono, and finds someone to stitch the kimono for them using the paper cloth they have prepared. As the paper preparation is part of the annual series of rituals, these will be worn the following year. These garments have a paper shell and cotton lining.
