Making jars (yang) in Yang Tao village : preparing the clay 2

Before making the jar, Mai Kim pounds the clay on a support, traditionally mortar to pound rice, turned upside down, called pal. She uses the pestle, called ne, to pound the clay until it is homogeneous and soft. This step of the process is called po uk, literally “pound clay”.

Trước khi làm ché, Mai Kim giã đất sét trên một trụ đỡ, mà cối truyền thống dùng để giã gạo,được úp ngược xuống, gọi là pal. bà ấy dùng chày, gọi là ne, để giã đất sét cho đến khi nó đều, mềm và nhuyễn. Bước này của quy trình được gọi là po uk, nghĩa đen là “giã đất sét”.
