Boat builder Manimohan Mondal uses a pencil to mark a point on the sub-sheer strake (naba dali) to indicate where a slot should be cut to accommodate the through beam. One mark is made on each side of the through beam. The pale string, attached to a nail in the stern post, was previously used to establish equidistance of the through beam on the port and starboard sides.
