Nafana mat weaver (deŋglɛ tinfun) Alexander Owusu pulls a weft strand upward in order to place it across five strands (pinde) wrapped in warp position over his left forefinger as he weaves the final pass on a small demonstration mat using a "5-star" technique. The horizontal selvage that he has created by making reverse folds in weft strands is visible to the right. The woven portion of the raffia mat (dɛŋglɛ) is wrapped around a raffia palm petiole stick (gbandaa kaan) that rests on his thighs. This keeps the working edge stable as he weaves from his left to his right. He will trim away the long ends of raffia strands that have been secured at the horizontal selvage edge after completing this weaving pass.
