After adding coil to a base to form the basic shape of the pot and smoothing the joins with her hands, H’Lan Êban uses a slice of bamboo called k’nơr, and rubs it on the walls with water. This action smooths the surface and erases the joins of the coils, but the potter also uses the pressure of the tool to narrow the opening.
