Smoothing the outer surface of the pot with a knife (dao) in Thanh Hà village 3/4

When shaving the outside of the pot with a metalic tool called cái vòng, Nguyễn Thị Thủy has created striations in the surface. To smooth it, she usually uses a thicker vòng and presses it on the surface of the pot, from top to mid-pot’s height, while the wheel is still running, to creates a smooth and almost shiny surface. However, when the clay is still too wet, she uses a dao (lit. Knife). This tool requires less pressure to smooth the pot, but it does not achieve the same shining effects as the usual tool.
