Võ Thị Sương and Giang Ngọc Xanh take turns watching the fire and adding wood when needed. During the firing, the pile of pots is covered with damp straw from the potter's own rice field. The straw is held in place on the sides by broken pots from the previous firing and covered on top with ashes from the previous fire.
