Nguyễn Thị Phương has created the preform of the basin on her wheel and already shaped the rim. She now takes a tool made from a thin strip of bamboo bent and tied into a circle. This tool is called a cái khót. She uses it to scrape the inside of the rough out horizontally, turning the wheel using the toe of her right foot and the pressure of her left hand on the rough out. This rounds the walls of the pots outwards.
