After washing, the water is strained out as best as possible, and the strips are put into a large pot with ash from the hearth or soda ash and boiled hard for 2 or 3 hours. The material is left in the pot to steam overnight with the remaining heat. This video clearly shows how the boiling process softens the fibers and they are easy to pull apart by hand
