Making a storage jar in Ki’Nonh village : Roughing out and reforming on wet clay (partial process ; inexperimented potters)

While the potter was making smaller pots, Hốih Tiến (village chief) and Zơrâm Thị Nga (potter’s daughter) are preparing to make a larger pot, to help the potter. Following the potter’s instruction, Hốih Tiến is opening the cylinder of clay. Then, Zơrâm Thị Nga presses repeatedly a handful of clay in her hands until it forms a long coil that she rolls around the edge of the pot, making it taller. Then, she uses her hands on the inside and on the outside to smooth the joins of the coils and join them to the body. Once she has a smooth pot of the desired height, and under the watchful eye of her mother, Zơrâm Thị Nga uses a stick made out of sugar cane and, still turning around the pot, presses it on the upper part on the inside and outside. This action not only regularises the thickness of the walls but the pressure is used to shape the pot. When she is satisfied with the overall form of the pot, Zơrâm Thị Nga shapes the rim. First, she roughly cuts the rim to the same length using her fingers. Then, she takes a banana flower leaf and places it astray on the edge of the pots, holding it with her left hand on the inside and her right hand on the outside. While turning around the pot, she tries to shape the rim. However, seeing her difficulties, her mother, potter Bling Thị Thuáh, takes the leaf to show her how it is done.
