After the preforming of the bowl, Y Gah has left a cylinder block of clay at the bottom of the shape to form the foot. Once the pot has dried enough to be manipulated, Y Gah has taken out clay from the inside of that cylinder with her thumb, to form a hole around 1cm deep in the center. She now uses a ring (of around 5cm in diameter) made of a thin slice of bamboo , called kong to scrape it. It makes the shape smooth and regular.

Title alt

Tạo hình đáy bát/nắp ở làng Kon Tơ Xing : Cạo phần đáy

Description alt

Temporality

The bottom of the pot has to be shaped after a drying time. It can be done only on a clay that is hard enough to be manipulated without losing its shape but still flexible enough to modify that shape.

Intent

This action, called “kôih” (to peel, shave) in Bahnar, makes the walls more regular and the pot lighter.
