Preforming the pots on leather-hard clay in Quế An village. Step 2 and 3: scraping inside kettles and adding the spout (2/3

After a certain time drying, the preform is placed back on the turntable, and the potter scrapes the inside with the bamboo tool (cái khót). The action aims at thinning the walls. Quite a lot of clay is removed during the process, leaving the walls only a few millimetres thin. She refers to this action as “cạo”, translated as to shave or to scrape. When the walls have a stisfying size, the potter first finds the thinner section of the wall and pierces a hole with her index finger. Then, forms the spouts, places it in front of the hole, and smoothes the junction, inside and outside. On this video we can see how the potter Võ Thị Sương, is waiting for the researcher, Cécile de Francquen, to make the spout for her. Although the spouts are irregular, she still uses them.
