During the loading, VTS also prepares the straws for the firing: She uses a hose to soak a large pile of straw. Between pre-firing and firing, Võ Thị Sương and Giang Ngọc Xanh separate the stack of straw in small airy pile containing one armful of straws. They bring them one by one and cover entirely the pots in the kilns with soaked straw. They install broken pots from previous firing on the straws all around the pile to keep them in place. Then GNX climbs on top of the wall. VTS brings him a basin full of ashes from previous firings. GNX empties it on top of the straw pile covering the firing pots and uses a stick to spread it evenly.
