Shaping a cooking pot in Kon Tơ Xing village 2/4 : Preforming

Y Gah and her daughter Y Khao are giving the pot its shape. To do that, they three different actions : –Push out: with her right hand inside and her left hand outside as a support, the potter pushes the walls out to enlarge the pot. –Even the walls from the outside: the potter uses her right hand’s fingers to scratch the outer surface in order to close up the cracks that appears when she pushes out the walls. It also helps to even the thickness of the walls. –Draw up the walls from the inside: With her right hand inside the pot and her left hand outside as a support, the potter presses slightly the walls in a move from bottom to top. This mostly even the thickness of the walls and pulls up some clay. Because the pot does not reach the intended height, They also add a coil on top of the edge and smooth the junction with their fingers, inside and outside, to elevate the walls.
